Horray for UrParts

We at UrParts.com regularly have nice things to celebrate but this week we hit a particularly momentous occasion when we went over 9,000 users. As we eat, breath and sleep parts, it’s good to know that over 9,000 people out there have come to us for help. Just knowing that we helped all these people save both Time and Money in their quest to find construction parts gives us a particularly warm squishy feeling inside.

On closer inspection it transpires that these people are located in 170 different countries around the world.  This got us thinking… What countries are we missing?

Can anybody guess?

Qatar World Cup 2022 comes at the price of human life.

World cup

Doha is a hive of construction activity with the 2022 World Cup development plans in full swing.  However the allegations of workers mistreatment is overshadowing any positive press it might bring to the region.  With many of the workers coming from Nepal and India reports suggest that on average 400 workers are dying every year. Evidence suggest that they are being forced to work 15 hour days in over 50 degree temperatures and surviving on a minimum of 1 meal per day. Between shifts they are living in appalling conditions with 20 people per room without access to basic medical facilities. Many of the workers went to Qatar expecting to be utilizing their trades as electricians and plumbers only to find that they are working cleaning or carrying cement and bricks on high rise apartment buildings.

Trade unions are concerned that the death toll could rise to 600 per year if drastic action is not taken soon to improve conditions.  Qatar is one of the world richest countries and is using over $100bn gained from natural resources on the infrastructure required to host the world cup.  While this is of benefit to the construction and spare parts industries, trade unions campaign it should not be at the expense of human beings trying to earn a living.

Competition Increases for Fire Damaged Machines

machine in fire

Prices for the fire damaged, or general machines for spare parts, at the recent Euro Auction in Leeds were remarkably high. Biding between competing dismantlers was fierce as they all try to increase their inventory of available used parts. Even though there has been a marked decrease in the scrap value of the metal, this increase in the prices being paid for damaged machines reiterates how the used parts market is continuing to grow. Demand for cheaper alternatives to main dealer prices for construction equipment parts has fuelled this growth. With month on month increases in parts requests submitted through online parts network UrParts.com it looks like this trend will continue.

Beware of Scammers

scam alert

We have been made aware of a particularly nasty scam that everybody dealing across international borders should be aware of. Somebody hacked into their Yahoo email account and saw that they had agreed to purchase a machine.  After the vendor emailed the invoice they copied the invoice, changed the bank details and then contacted the buyer saying that the account number had changed. Had the purchaser looked closely they would have noticed that the email address was not the correct email address rather the companyname@mail.com.  The purchaser then made a bank transfer into the fake account thinking it belonged to the supplier.  Luckily on this occasion the customer was able to intervene with the Police and got their funds returned, but others might not be so lucky.

We have come up with some helpful tips to help avoid becoming the victim of a scam whether you are buying or selling machinery or parts:

  • Check every detail on the invoice carefully
  • Always call the company in person to verify the bank details
  • Cross reference contact details with the company’s website
  • If in doubt check, double check and triple check everything
  • Be alert for any suspicious correspondence about changes to bank details

Obama compares Bridges in the US to people on Medicare

bridges

There are thousands of bridges throughout the USA that are in dire need of either repair or replacement. Many face the problem however that the designs are so old it would be more prudent to tear down and replace with modern new bridges built with modern construction methods and machinery.   Obama’s suggests congress pass his “Fix-it-First” plan that he set up to try to get people back into the workforce by increasing infrastructure spending.  He commented that there are over 100,000 bridges old enough to qualify for Medicare.

A spokesperson from the Department of Transport urged people not to worry as all the bridges are safe and under constant monitoring by the department.

The increase in infrastructure spending should help boost the markets and increase sales for construction machinery and parts.

Germany’s Construction sector on the rise

Germany

Sales of Construction equipment is the area of the industry that is showing the most growth. The VDMA, Germany’s association for construction equipment and building material machinery, said that its prediction for a poor beginning to the year leading into a slow increase over the rest of the year appeared to be accurate. Although some of the positive figures to date were largely due to special projects they are still confident that growth predictions will be realized.

The German construction equipment and building material machinery industry made €12.5 billion in turnover in 2012.  Of this, €7.9 billion was on construction equipment and €4.6 billion on building material, glass and ceramics machinery.

With such encouraging sales figures of construction equipment and heavy machinery the parts industries will benefit from the knock on effects.

Parts market to exceed $23 billion USD in 2013

The increase in demand for aftermarket parts is continuing to grow. Long established in the car market this growing trend has been mirrored in the construction equipment market.

Some of the world’s largest construction equipment users such as CRH, UBE, Lafarge, Cemex etc who traditionally only used OEM parts are now benefiting from the huge savings to be made from purchasing aftermarket parts. With the construction equipment parts market set to exceed $23 billion USD this year, increasing to $27bn USD in 2018, there is plenty of room for OEM, Aftermarket and Used Parts to help these multinationals reduce their running costs.

6 Tips to Reduce Data Roaming

air-travel

We came across the following tips on how to reduce the high prices service providers charge everybody who travels.  So, being the nice people that we are, we decided to share the knowledge:

1 – Turn off Data Roaming

Wherever possible only use WiFi to access data and you will not incur any network charges.

2 – Turn off Push Notifications and Auto-Synching

These are alerts that notify you when you have a new email etc.  For iPhones go to Settings-Mail-Contacts-Calendars-Fetch New Data – Turn Off Push Notifications. This can also be done individually for each app. For Android go to Settings-Accounts & Synch

3 – Check Data Count

Reset your data monitor before you leave so you know exactly how much you have used.

4 – Contact your provider for an International Bundle

Most providers have international packages that they can ‘Add on’ for the period of time that you are travelling.  Make sure you have this applied for the times when you don’t have access to WiFi and have to use roaming.

5 – Buy a local SIM card

This is the cheapest option but comes with its own hassle. Ensure your phone is unlocked so it will take the sim form another provider. You will also have a new phone number for the local country. You could divert your usual number to this local number to continue to receive calls however this is usually not possible for sms messages.

6 – Use your Apps where WiFi is available

There are loads of great apps that allow you to communicate for Free with voice, text images and movies while you are connected to WiFi

Here are some samples : WhatsApp, Viber, Skype, Voxer

So whether you are working on construction sites in Dubai, sitting in a bulldozer in Canada, or travelling the work buying and selling Heavy Machinery, hopefully we have helped in some small way to reduce your bills.
