November 2013 – May 2014 results show that the top 5 brands have held their places as the parts most searched for during this period. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, JCB and Hitachi maintained their order from the previous 6 months. However Case took over the the next position which was previously held by John Deer.
Closer analyses illustrates the exact types of machines for which people have been searching for parts. Not much movement in the types of machines since our last report with excavators accounting for the the largest portion.
All Requests can be viewed on the website with more information of the type of parts people are searching for. Requests vary enormously including hydraulic pumps, engines, axles, final drives, cylinders, transmissions, gaskets, injectors and much more.
The eagerly awaited updated figures for parts requests have been released for the past six months. CAT still retain their top position with 20% of all parts requests submitted followed by Komatsu, Volvo, JCB and Hitachi. Previously only the top five made it into the list but it was decided to stretch this out to six as John Deer was so close with only 12 requests less than Hitachi.
We have also included a breakdown by types of machines we are receiving the most requests. Excavators are by far the most popular with 39% of all requests.

Prices for the fire damaged, or general machines for spare parts, at the recent Euro Auction in Leeds were remarkably high. Biding between competing dismantlers was fierce as they all try to increase their inventory of available used parts. Even though there has been a marked decrease in the scrap value of the metal, this increase in the prices being paid for damaged machines reiterates how the used parts market is continuing to grow. Demand for cheaper alternatives to main dealer prices for construction equipment parts has fuelled this growth. With month on month increases in parts requests submitted through online parts network UrParts.com it looks like this trend will continue.
Analysis of the second quarter part requests from around the world have revealed that Komatsu has overtaken Volvo and JCB as the second highest brand when compared to the first quarter. Cat continue to hold the top position however the gap between it and the following 4 brands is narrowing. In descending order the top 5 brands for this quarter were Cat, Komatsu, Volvo, JCB, Hitachi and they account for almost half out of a total of 2,505 requests processed. As the number of monthly part requests continue to increase month on month the third quarter results for 2013 should make for interesting reading.
At the heavy equipment auction Ritchie Bros in Hartford, CT, USA yesterday there was a lot of older Cat equipment still making high prices. This confirms what is obvious from recent UrParts.comparts requests that due to the continued recession in the construction market many operators are choosing to purchase older machines and keep them running with cheaper spare parts than finance the purchase of younger equipment. This trend is also due in part to the increase of electronic control in construction equipment produced post year 2000. An increasing amount of owners regret purchasing newer equipment as it requires at lot of additional costs when getting the main dealer out to diagnose simple electronic faults that cannot be found or repaired without difficult to obtain hardware and software.
Caterpillar is putting innovation and technology to work to make sustainable progress possible. Doug Oberhelman, Caterpillar Chairman and CEO, provides the Chairman’s Message for the 2012 Sustainability Report.
Analyses of part requests from around the world have revealed that the top 5 Brands of searched parts in the first quarter of 2013 are Cat, Volvo, JCB, Komatsu, Hitachi. This indicates that the big brands continue to keep a foothold in the market regardless of the effect the global recession is having on the industry. Out of a total of 1779 processed parts requests almost half of the total requests were for machines for these 5 brands. The leading brand being Cat is ahead by almost half that of Volvo being the next largest brand.
